Advocate of the Year

Advocate of the Year gives participants the unique opportunity to develop real-world legal skills in a competitive arena.  The competition involves preparing and delivering aspects of realistic cases, replicating the work of the junior Bar.  Actors will play the client roles, and competitors will be judged by BPP tutors, who are qualified lawyers with real trial experience. All competitors will receive expert feedback and guidance, and the overall winner will be awarded a scholarship for BPP’s Barrister Training Course.  Other prizes will be awarded to the most promising advocates.

The competition is open to all students who are yet to commence their legal vocational training (BTC, LPC, SQE), and who have not taken part in our Advocate of the Year competition in previous years.

Teams from different universities across the UK, including composite team(s) made up of individuals from other universities, will take part in the first round heat stage of the competition. The highest 16 performing individual advocates in the first round trials will qualify for a place in the Grand Final.  The Grand Final will take place at the Old Bailey in London on 29 March 2025, where the ultimate individual winner of the Advocate of the Year will be decided.  If, for any reason, the Grand Final cannot take place as a face-to-face competition, it will instead run online.  All competitors must be available on both 30 November 2024 and 29 March 2025.
